PROBLEMS AFFECTING EFFECTIVE TEACHING OF BIOLOGY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NSUKKA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract:
This research investigates the challenges impacting the effective teaching of Biology in secondary schools within the Nsukka Local Government Area. Recognizing the pivotal role of Biology in shaping students’ scientific understanding and fostering scientific literacy, the study aims to identify and analyze the multifaceted issues hindering the optimal delivery of Biology education in this specific locality.
Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines surveys, interviews, and classroom observations to gather data from Biology teachers, students, and school administrators. The findings reveal a range of challenges, including inadequate instructional resources, insufficient teacher training, and students’ lack of interest and motivation. Additionally, curriculum constraints, examination pressures, and infrastructural deficiencies emerge as contributing factors.
The study not only highlights the existing problems but also explores potential solutions and strategies for enhancing the teaching and learning of Biology. Recommendations include targeted professional development for teachers, increased investment in instructional materials, and the incorporation of practical, hands-on approaches to engage students and stimulate their interest in Biology.
By shedding light on the specific challenges faced in Nsukka Local Government Area, this research contributes valuable insights to the broader discourse on science education in Nigeria.
