CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Land use practices refer to the ways in which humans utilize and modify the land for various purposes, including agriculture, urban development, industrial activities, and forestry (Turner et al., 2007). These practices are often driven by socio-economic needs such as food production, housing, and economic development. However, the manner in which land is used significantly influences environmental health and safety, particularly through soil degradation, deforestation, water contamination, and air pollution (Lambin & Geist, 2006).
Environmental health encompasses the physical, chemical, and biological factors external to a person that may impact human well-being (WHO, 2016). Unsafe land use practices, such as indiscriminate deforestation, uncontrolled urban sprawl, and improper waste disposal, have been linked to increased exposure to pollutants, spread of diseases, and a general decline in ecosystem services that support human life (Tilman et al., 2001). For instance, agricultural intensification without proper soil management can lead to nutrient depletion and pesticide contamination of water bodies, which in turn affects the health of rural and urban communities alike (Pretty et al., 2011).
Moreover, urbanization and industrial expansion in fragile ecological zones often lead to flooding, erosion, and hazardous exposure to chemicals, thereby threatening public safety (Seto et al., 2012). In the Niger Delta region, for example, improper land use associated with oil exploration and gas flaring has been shown to compromise both environmental quality and community health (Okon et al., 2019). This demonstrates that land use practices not only shape the physical environment but also have direct and indirect consequences for human health and safety.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing awareness of environmental conservation, inappropriate land use practices continue to pose serious risks to environmental health and safety. Activities such as deforestation, unregulated agriculture, urban encroachment, and improper industrial land management often result in soil erosion, air and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity (Foley et al., 2005). These environmental changes increase the vulnerability of populations to health hazards such as waterborne diseases, respiratory problems, and accidents associated with unstable terrains or poorly planned infrastructures (McMichael, 2000).
In many rural and urban areas, communities lack adequate knowledge of sustainable land management practices, which exacerbates environmental degradation and health risks (Reed et al., 2015). Additionally, policies regulating land use and environmental safety are often poorly enforced, leaving ecosystems and human populations exposed to multiple hazards (World Bank, 2018). The cumulative effect of these practices has implications for sustainable development, community safety, and the overall well-being of affected populations.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of land use practices on environmental health and safety. Specifically, the study aims to:
Examine the various land use practices commonly employed in the study area.
Investigate the environmental consequences of these land use practices.
Assess the effects of land use practices on public health and safety.
Recommend strategies for sustainable land management to mitigate health and safety risks.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
What are the prevalent land use practices in the study area?
How do these land use practices affect environmental quality?
What are the health and safety implications of these land use practices for local communities?
What strategies can be implemented to promote sustainable land use and enhance environmental safety?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the link between land use and environmental health and safety, providing policymakers, environmental managers, and communities with insights to implement sustainable land management practices. By identifying harmful practices and their consequences, the study can inform interventions aimed at reducing environmental hazards, improving public health, and promoting safety in both rural and urban settings (Meyer & Turner, 1992). Furthermore, the findings can guide future research on sustainable land use policies and environmental health strategies in developing regions.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on examining the impact of land use practices on environmental health and safety, with particular attention to agricultural, industrial, and urban land use activities. It considers the effects on soil, water, air quality, biodiversity, and human health, providing a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between land use and environmental safety. The geographical focus may include selected communities where these activities are prevalent to provide a case-based analysis.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Land Use Practices: Human activities that involve the modification or management of land for purposes such as agriculture, industry, urbanization, or forestry (Turner et al., 2007).
Environmental Health: The branch of public health that deals with all physical, chemical, and biological factors external to a person, and related factors impacting behavior (WHO, 2016).
Environmental Safety: The protection of the environment from hazards caused by human activities to prevent harm to ecosystems and human populations.
Sustainable Land Management: Practices that integrate land, water, biodiversity, and environmental management to meet human needs while ensuring long-term ecosystem health (Pretty et al., 2011).
