INTEGRATION OF MOBILE GIS APPLICATIONS IN FIELD SURVEYS
Abstract
This study examined the integration of mobile Geographic Information System (GIS) applications in field surveys, with a focus on enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and data management in geographic data collection. Field surveys are critical in spatial data acquisition for planning, environmental monitoring, and resource management; however, traditional methods often face challenges such as time consumption, data errors, and logistical limitations. The study adopted a descriptive survey and case study approach, targeting professionals and students engaged in fieldwork, including surveyors, geographers, and environmental scientists. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, interviews, and observation of field activities involving mobile GIS applications.
Findings revealed that mobile GIS applications significantly improve the speed of data collection, accuracy of spatial information, and ease of real-time data analysis. Applications such as ArcGIS Collector, QField, and Mappt facilitate georeferencing, mapping, and cloud-based data storage, reducing errors associated with manual recording. Respondents also reported increased collaboration and decision-making efficiency due to integrated data sharing capabilities. Challenges identified included limited technical skills among some users, inconsistent internet connectivity, and device compatibility issues.
The study concluded that integrating mobile GIS applications into field surveys enhances data reliability, operational efficiency, and informed decision-making. It recommended targeted training for field personnel, investment in compatible mobile devices, and incorporation of mobile GIS modules into geospatial and environmental curricula to maximize the benefits of technology-driven field survey practices.
