PARENTAL ATTITUDE, PEER PRESSURE, GET RICH QUICK SYNDROME AND DRIVE FOR INTERNET FRAUD AMONG UNDERGRADUATES
Abstract
This study examines the influence of parental attitude, peer pressure, and the get-rich-quick syndrome on the drive for internet fraud among undergraduates. Internet fraud, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo” in Nigeria, has become a major social and moral concern, particularly among youths in tertiary institutions. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, targeting undergraduate students across selected universities. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings reveal that negative parental supervision, peer influence, and the societal glorification of sudden wealth significantly contribute to undergraduates’ involvement in internet fraud. The study recommends strengthened parental guidance, value-based education, and moral reorientation programs to curb this growing menace. The results underscore the need for a multidimensional approach involving families, institutions, and policymakers in addressing the socio-psychological drivers of cybercrime among youths.
Keywords: Parental attitude, peer pressure, get-rich-quick syndrome, internet fraud, undergraduates, Nigeria.
