THE IMPACT OF FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT ON STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME
ABSTRACT
This study examined the impact of formative assessment on students’ learning outcomes in educational institutions. Formative assessment, which involves continuous evaluation and feedback during the teaching–learning process, has been widely recognized as a strategy for enhancing students’ academic achievement and engagement. The study adopted a descriptive survey and quasi-experimental research design to investigate how formative assessment practices influence students’ cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning outcomes. A sample of students and teachers was selected using appropriate sampling techniques, and data were collected through questionnaires, classroom observation checklists, and achievement tests. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential tools such as t-test and analysis of variance. Findings revealed that formative assessment significantly improves students’ academic performance, promotes active participation, and enhances retention of learned concepts. The study also found that timely feedback and learner involvement in assessment activities positively influence motivation and self-regulated learning. Based on the findings, the study concludes that formative assessment is a powerful instructional strategy that supports effective learning and improved educational outcomes. It therefore recommends that teachers should integrate formative assessment techniques regularly into classroom instruction, and educational administrators should provide adequate training and support to enhance teachers’ assessment competencies.
