CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Bush burning is a long-standing land management practice in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Nigeria, where it is used for land clearing, hunting, and pest control (Adejumo, 2000). Although it is perceived as a cheap and quick method of clearing vegetation, bush burning has serious environmental consequences. These include soil nutrient loss, destruction of biodiversity, air pollution, and disruption of ecological balance (FAO, 2019).
In forest and plantation environments, fire alters soil structure and reduces organic matter, which negatively affects plant growth and regeneration (Certini, 2005). The University of Ibadan Plantation serves both academic and ecological functions, providing resources for teaching, research, and environmental conservation. However, recurring bush burning within and around the plantation threatens its sustainability and productivity.
Studies show that repeated burning reduces soil fertility by volatilizing essential nutrients such as nitrogen and sulfur and increasing erosion risk (Neary, Ryan & DeBano, 2005). In addition, bush burning contributes to climate change through the release of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane (IPCC, 2021).
Given the importance of the University of Ibadan Plantation as a research and conservation site, understanding the effects of bush burning on its soil, vegetation, and ecological stability is necessary for effective management and policy formulation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite environmental regulations and awareness campaigns, bush burning continues to occur around the University of Ibadan Plantation. This practice has resulted in loss of valuable tree species, destruction of undergrowth, and decline in soil quality. Fire outbreaks also pose risks to research facilities and compromise the plantation’s role in biodiversity conservation.
The problem therefore is the continued degradation of the plantation ecosystem due to uncontrolled bush burning. If not addressed, this may lead to long-term environmental damage, reduced research value, and loss of economic and ecological benefits associated with the plantation.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effects of bush burning on the University of Ibadan Plantation.
The specific objectives are to:
Assess the impact of bush burning on soil fertility in the plantation.
Examine the effects of bush burning on vegetation cover and biodiversity.
Determine how bush burning influences tree regeneration and growth.
Evaluate the environmental and academic implications of bush burning on the plantation.
Suggest strategies for controlling bush burning in the University of Ibadan Plantation.
1.4 Research Questions
This study seeks to answer the following questions:
What effects does bush burning have on soil properties in the plantation?
How does bush burning affect plant species diversity and vegetation structure?
What is the impact of bush burning on tree regeneration and survival?
How does bush burning influence the academic and ecological value of the plantation?
What measures can be adopted to reduce bush burning in the area?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will:
Provide scientific evidence on the ecological effects of bush burning on plantation ecosystems.
Assist the University of Ibadan management in developing better fire control and conservation strategies.
Serve as a reference material for students and researchers in environmental science, forestry, and geography.
Contribute to policy formulation on sustainable land and forest management in Nigeria.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the University of Ibadan Plantation. It examines the effects of bush burning on soil, vegetation, and tree regeneration within the plantation area. The study is limited to environmental and ecological impacts and does not cover economic valuation in detail.
