CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Rapid urbanization, population growth, and increasing motorization have led to a significant rise in the number of automobiles on roads worldwide. Automobiles are a major source of air pollution, releasing exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) (WHO, 2021). These pollutants originate from incomplete fuel combustion in vehicle engines and from evaporative emissions, brake wear, tire wear, and road dust resuspension (Colvile, Hutchinson, Mindell & Warren, 2001).
Automobile exhaust emissions have become a critical environmental and public health concern because air pollutants directly affect respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and reproductive systems (Brook et al., 2010). Exposure to vehicular emissions has been linked to asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and premature mortality (HEI, 2019). Children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing diseases are particularly vulnerable due to weaker immune and respiratory systems (Gauderman et al., 2004).
In many developing countries, including Nigeria, rapid growth in vehicle ownership occurs alongside poor vehicle maintenance, aging fleets, traffic congestion, poor road infrastructure, and weak emission control regulations, which exacerbate pollutant levels (Akinyemi & Odumosu, 2018). Urban centers such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Onitsha, and Abuja experience high vehicular traffic density and frequent smog occurrences, reflecting the contribution of automobile emissions to declining air quality (Ede & Edokpa, 2017).
Beyond health implications, automobile emissions also pose safety risks. Reduced visibility due to smog increases accident rates, while toxic gases such as CO may lead to headaches, dizziness, unconsciousness, and death in confined or poorly ventilated environments (CDC, 2020). Thus, exhaust emissions are both public health hazards and public safety threats, necessitating comprehensive research on their sources, effects, and mitigation strategies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing awareness of environmental pollution, automobile exhaust emissions remain inadequately controlled in many urban areas. Daily exposure to harmful pollutants persists due to growing numbers of vehicles, poor fuel quality, inadequate inspection systems, and weak enforcement of emission standards (Akinyemi & Odumosu, 2018). As a result, urban populations are increasingly exposed to health risks such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular complications, reduced lung function, and elevated mortality (HEI, 2019; WHO, 2021).
Furthermore, most existing studies in Nigeria have focused on industrial pollution, neglecting the specific contributions of automobile emissions to health burdens and road safety. There is also insufficient public awareness regarding the dangers of exhaust gases and the benefits of emission control technologies, such as catalytic converters and alternative fuels. This gap highlights the need to evaluate how automobile emissions impact public health, environmental quality, and safety outcomes, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.3.1 General Objective
The general objective of this study is to examine the impact of automobile exhaust gases and emissions on public health and safety.
1.3.2 Specific Objectives
The specific objectives are to:
identify the major types and sources of automobile exhaust emissions;
examine the health effects of exposure to automobile exhaust gases on the public;
assess the impact of automobile emissions on road safety and environmental visibility;
investigate public awareness of the dangers associated with automobile emissions;
suggest control and mitigation strategies for reducing health and safety risks from automobile exhaust gases.
1.4 Research Questions
This study will be guided by the following research questions:
What are the major types and sources of automobile exhaust emissions?
What are the health effects of exposure to automobile exhaust gases on the public?
How do automobile emissions affect road safety and visibility?
What is the level of public awareness regarding the dangers of automobile emissions?
What strategies can be adopted to mitigate health and safety risks associated with automobile exhaust gases?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The study will test the following hypotheses:
H₀₁: Automobile exhaust emissions have no significant effect on public health.
H₀₂: Automobile exhaust emissions have no significant impact on public safety.
H₀₃: There is no significant relationship between public awareness and exposure to automobile exhaust emissions.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will benefit:

Environmental agencies, through input for emission regulation and monitoring.
Urban planners and transport authorities, by encouraging sustainable transportation systems.

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of automobile exhaust gases and emissions on public health and safety in selected urban areas. It examines pollutant types, emission sources, exposure levels, public awareness, and associated risks. Industrial emissions and indoor air pollution are excluded. The study population consists of road users, residents, drivers, transport workers, and health practitioners.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Automobile Exhaust Gases: Pollutants emitted from vehicle engines during combustion.
Emissions: Release of gases or particles into the atmosphere from vehicles.
Public Health: Health status and disease conditions affecting populations.
Public Safety: Protection of people from harm, accidents, and hazardous exposure.
Particulate Matter (PM): Tiny particles suspended in air capable of entering lungs.
Air Pollution: Contamination of the atmosphere by harmful substances.
